Volvo Trucks has delivered the first two fully electric trucks on the Estonian market to A. Le Coq, the country’s largest beverage producer. The new Volvos will serve A. Le Coq’s customers in Tartu, making the university town a pioneer in the use of electric trucks in Estonia.

Estonia’s first electric tractor unit will operate between A. Le Coq’s logistics center and production facility, while the electric-powered Volvo box truck will serve the company’s customers within the city of Tartu. A. Le Coq is the only company in Estonia currently using fully electric heavy-duty trucks. With the addition of the two new Volvos, the beverage producer’s fleet now includes a total of four electric trucks.

“Transitioning to electric trucks is a strategic decision that supports our goal of reducing the environmental impact of transport,” said Erki Lehiste, A. Le Coq’s Director of Logistics and Procurement. “Environmentally friendly transport solutions are part of our company’s broader sustainability strategy. These new trucks allow us to move closer to carbon-neutral production and supply chain targets.”

A. Le Coq uses only renewable green electricity to power its trucks. As a result, the energy-related carbon footprint of the vehicles is 99% lower compared to diesel trucks. When using home chargers during off-peak nighttime hours or its own renewable electricity, the average cost per kilometer becomes comparable to diesel vehicles with sufficient mileage.

According to Karin Johansson, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks Baltic North, the use of electric trucks reduces emissions, creates a quieter and vibration-free working environment for drivers, and contributes to cleaner urban air. “These trucks make it possible to carry out nighttime and early-morning deliveries without disturbing residents. Every new electric truck on Estonia’s roads is a step closer to our common goal of making transport cleaner, quieter, and more efficient,” she said.

The charging park installed on A. Le Coq’s factory premises is managed and operated by energy company Alexela. “This is a great example of how collaboration can provide more than just charging equipment. Our goal is to be an energy partner—helping the client assess current and future energy needs and offering comprehensive, future-proof solutions,” said Kristjan Suurorg, Head of E-Mobility at Alexela.

The Volvo FM Electric trucks handed over to A. Le Coq are designed for both regional and urban operations, offering versatile and environmentally conscious logistics solutions. The trucks, with a gross vehicle weight of over 20 tons, are capable of transporting up to 18 tons (tractor unit) and 6.5 tons (box truck) of goods. Powered by electric motors delivering up to 490 kW, the tractor unit is equipped with three motors and a battery pack with 540 kWh capacity, while the box truck has two motors and a 360 kWh battery. Charging takes approximately 9.5 hours with an AC charger (43 kW) and just 2.5 hours with a DC fast charger (250 kW). On a full charge, the tractor unit can cover up to 250 kilometers and the box truck up to 200 kilometers.
